Carmike 14 is one of the movie theaters in Johnson City. It is located at 1850 N Roan St, very easy to find. Their hours everyday are 11AM-11PM. Complete with Cineplex with 3D and jumbo digital screens they show everything from films, opera productions and sporting events.

This theater is just like every other Carmike Cinemas, in a good way. You always expect to be greeted with a smile and asked how you can be helped. Walking inside and the floors being clean with the fresh smell of popcorn floating around the air. Then walking down the steps and being directed to your theater. Finally you have arrived, you step into the theater with walkways lined with LED lights, trying to find the perfect place to sit. This is the ideal movie theater experience and this is exactly what you will get when you visit Carmike 14 in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Turbo Kid

Set in a post-apocalyptic world an orphaned teen must battle the evil warlord to save the girl he loves. One Sunday morning me and my friends were lounging around trying to find something to watch on Netflix, as usual. We were searching through movies and came across Turbo Kid , someone suggested we watch that because no one had seen it before. This is quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. While we had some laughs watching this movie, mostly from making fun of it, I was confused as to why this movie got made in the first place. It is a very low budget movie and you could tell it was the actors first movie. Even thought it was an awful movie we all had a good time watching it and it started the Sunday morning tradition for me and my friends to find the worst movie on Netflix we can, so at least one good thing came from this movie.

Oculus

With the memories of their parents death still fresh in their minds brother and sister, Kaylie and Tim, struggle to rebuild their relationship. When something strange happened to their parents 10 years earlier Kaylie vowed to find the answer. She believes the antique mirror that use to hang in her dads office is to blame. When anyone would look into the mirror an evil force would over take that person, but as she nears the truth the mirrors evil powers only seem to get stronger. If you like scary, mind twisting movies then this one is for you, everything is not what it seems to be. This movie can be found on Netflix. It is a great movie to watch for a scary movie night with your friends.

The Lazarus Effect

A team of medical researchers have gone rogue and are playing God with the formula they have created that successfully brought a deceased dog back to life. The first experiment on the dog went without a flaw, so the team recreated the experiment to test it again. But when one of the researchers gets killed during the experiment they try the drug on a human for the first time. The women is brought back to life but not without some serious consequences. If you did not watch the trailer for this movie before seeing it, like me, you are going to be surprised at how things turn out. I was under the impression that this film was just about brining the dog back to life and the science behind it. However once the women is brought back from the dead it seems that an evil force has taken over her body. With the ability to control objects with her mind no on is safe from her wrath.

The Greatest Disaster in College Sports History

In the 1970’s football was everything, especially in a small rural town. We Are Marshall is the tragic tale about when 75 members of the football team, coaches and boosters lost their lives in a plane crash. The town is turned upside down and losing their minds at the thought of not having a football program at their beloved Marshall University. A year later the school gets a call from a man who is determined to rebuild the football program and peoples moral after the accident. Matthew McConaughey plays Jack Lengyel, the new coach with the task of reconstructing not only the football program but the University and town.

The Great Gatsby

Set in the 1920’s The Great Gatsby tells the tale of a Midwest native Nick Carraway. Carraway moves to New York to be a writer. He sets up next to millionaire Jay Gatsby played by Leonardo DiCaprio and across the bay from his cousin Daisy and her controlling husband Tom. Living next to a millionaire has its perks. After being invited to a couple of Gatsby’s legendary parties Nick has had a taste of the good life and it leaves him wanting more. A love triangle between Gatsby, Daisy and her husband is the main story in this film and things go from bad to worse when someone ends up dead. This movie is very charming. Getting a look back at how the worlds elite lived in the early twenties makes us all wish that would of been our lives, but sadly it is not. Thankfully we have great producers, directors and actors to transport us into different times even if it is only for a few hours.

Inception

Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this Fantasy film about a man with the unique ability to enter people’s dreams and steal their most personal secrets. This ability has made Dom Cobb a very desirable man in the corporate world . Companies pay him big bucks to steal their competitors secrets. Set up to commit the perfect crime, all Cobb has to do is plant an idea in someone’s mind, but with one of his many enemy’s predicting his every move it turns out to be more of a challenge than he originally thought. Once again Leo gives an amazing performance in this dramatic type of movie. While I am a firm believer that DiCaprio will give a great performance in any kind of movie, dramatic and serious movies is where he shines. His ability to connect to the role he is playing is great and his facial expressions alone can set the mood for the rest of the movie.

The “Unsinkable” Ship

Titanic cost $200 million to make, the most expensive movie of its time. For this fact alone the film had a huge following before it appeared in theaters. James Cameron directed this sensational tale of romance, heartbreak and tragedy. The story focuses on two passengers of the ship, who came from different social classes. Leonardo DiCaprio as low class traveler Jack Dawson and Kate Winslet as Rose DeWitt Bukater, a young women pressured to marry a man she is not in love with. These two meet just as Rose is about to jump overboard because she would rather die than spend the rest of her life with someone for whom she has no feelings for. Just as their romance is heating up the ship collides with an iceberg and some difficult decisions must be made by passengers and crew members. This movie is highly respected in the film industry because it set standards no other movies, at that time, could achieve. When people speak of epic Hollywood movies the title Titanic is sure to come up. This film paved the way for the great movies to come.

 

 

 

 

Greed is Good, and Now it Seems to be Legal

The Wolf of Wall Street is much more than a movie. It is a uncensored look back into what Wall Street was really like. Young and hungry broker Jordan Belfort played by Leonardo DiCaprio is entering the fast pace, trash talking world of Wall Street. After working his way up from his entry-level job Belfort starts his own firm with his band of conniving companions. They make their money by swindling wealthy investors out of millions. While Belfort and his buddies are enjoying their success in the form of sex, drugs and anything else they can  get their hands on, the FBI is closing in on their illegal business tactics. The actors make this movie great. Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey and Kyle Chandler are just some of the actors from this star studded cast. Even though you know all of them from different movies or tv series they mesh well together. They all have something different to bring to the table and I think that is great, when you get a group of people together from different backgrounds and make something real and entertaining people are going to want to watch it.

Deadpool

When a retired special forces operative is diagnosed with cancer he turns to his last option, an evil scientist. However Wade Wilson played by Ryan Reynolds is unpleased with the experiment when he sees how he looks. The experiment left him looking more dead than alive. With the ability to heal instantly and a new superhero name, Deadpool, Wilson sets out to destroy the man who nearly killed him. This film is filled with action and witty comments. As I sat there and watched the first ten minuets of this movie I didn’t think I was going to enjoy the rest of it, but as it went on and I learned the back story of the characters it really grew on me. It had a good mixture of funny and serious times. Discloser: This is not a family friendly movie.
